About

Web Hosting and Websites

For charities, social enterprises and community groups we offer a hosting and design service for your website. There are three broad options that you can use.

Firstly, you can use us to host your site and to create, maintain and run your site. Secondly, we can create you a basic site for free and you update it as needed (there are full instructions on how to do this). Thirdly, you can create your own site (including using common software like WordPress) and just use us to host your site.

We also include email in our hosting package. The domain name (the www… bit) is included in the cost if you use a .org.uk or .co.uk domain name.

If you are a charity, social enterprise or community group and would like a website, please do get in touch.

Features

Website Features

Email

Our website packages have the following email features:

  • You choose what email addresses you want (in the format ‘anything@yoursite.org.uk’) – so you can have email addresses like info@yoursite.com or support@yoursite.com or Jane.Doe@yoursite.com.
  • You can have up to 15 email addresses for your site.
  • Each email has a mailbox that holds up to 2GB of storage.
  • We can provide you with all the information you need to access your email from anywhere on any device. You will be able to access your email from the web, on a computer using software like Outlook, or on your tablet or smartphone.
Disk Space

This is the amount of storage that you can use to store your website. This includes web pages and any documents you make available for download etc.

The amount of disk space you need will depend on things like: how many images you use; whether you use videos and how many; how many web pages your site has; and how many documents like PDFs you have.

Web Traffic

This is the amount of data that is transferred from your site to your website’s users.

Whenever someone views your site, files are transferred to their browser in order for them to see your website’s pages. The web traffic is the size of the data that is transferred.

Subdomains

Subdomains is the name given to parts of a site that have a unique name and appear before the main URL of your site.

For example, setting up a ‘news’ subdomain on ‘www.yoursite.com’ would link as ‘www.news.yoursite.com’.

MySQL Databases

Databases are used to store information. Your package will allow you to set up databases that you can use for your website.

Note that some software for creating websites (like WordPress) needs a database to work, and this will count as 1 of your databases included in your package.

MySQL is the software used to manage the creation and running of a database.

PHP

PHP is a common programming language used for websites. It is often used by other software (like WordPress).

Both of our hosting packages allow you to use PHP, and we can set the version you want to use.

Content Management System

A Content Management System (CMS) is a bit of software that lets you create websites and easily maintain them. The advantage of using them is that it is easier to keep your website updated (so, for example, to update some text you do not need to know how to code a computer program).

Common CMS’s include WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. If you like, we can install any of these as a part of your package.

Backups

Backups are copies of your site. We process backups every night, so you can get in touch and restore your website to yesterday’s version if something goes wrong.

We process a backup each night and keep 7 days worth of backups.

SSL Certificate

SSL certificates are used to encrypt data between somone’s computer and the web site that has the certificate. Lots of websites now use certificates as standard to give peace of mind to users. Browsers usually show that data is being encrypted, for example by displaying a padlock.

SSL certificates are a must if you want to use your website to handle personal data. We will install a free SSL certificate on your site, using a company called Let’s Encrypt.
